Percents of Time

6th Grade Math Lesson: Percents of Time

Calif Math Standard: Number Sense 1.2
Compute a given percent of a whole number.

Objective: Students will be able to calculate the given percent of a
number (20% of 3 minutes). They will then video a set of
events that match the correct number of seconds
calculated.

Procedure: Students will be split into teams of 4.
Establish a time frame (1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes).
Have students calculate how many seconds correspond
to various percents (20%, 30%, 50%).
Each team will take their Flip Video and capture events
that meet the following criteria:

The video should be 1 minute in length.
Someone should be walking 20% of the time.
Someone should be running 30% of the time.
Someone should be eating 50% of the time.

These events can be shot in any order and can involve
one or more actors.

Scoring Rubric: Videos will be assessed on the following:

Accuracy of calculations -------------- 5 points
Events match time calculated ------- 5 points
