School: Willow Bend Elementary School, Rolling Mdws, IL
Planned By: Karen Alderson
Original Author: Karen Alderson, Rolling Mdws
Objective: To produce a video to be shown to ELL newcomer students showing them their new school environment while meeting the people who will help them along the way.

Key Vocabulary: brainstorming, flash drive, editing, research, broadcasting

Time Frame: 1-2 weeks

Prior Knowledge: Draw or talk about schools in their country of origin. What was a typical day like? Compare and contrast with a Venn diagram the two schools and start thinking of when you arrived at Willow Bend.

Activities:

*Tour a nearby school to remind us of what it feels like to be in a new place.

*Students will come together to brainstorm how they felt in a the new school and what they needed to know when they were a new student to Willow Bend. A compiles list will be made.

*Discuss how those needs can be met with a video. Create flowcharts to demonstrate how the video will be constructed.

*Tour Willow Bend to gather information on locations and people to be included in the video.

* Select subject area for each student's section of the video. Have students write/draw a rough draft of what will be included in this part of the video. (write script is needed)

*Students practice and record final copy of their portion of the video.

*Students view each others videos for peer review and editing.

*Students combine videos to create one tour of Willow Bend School.

*Students will present the video in classrooms around the school and make copies for incoming parents, district office, school website, and community centers.
Comments
Most items needed to complete the lessons are on location at Willow Bend. Our population of second language learners has increased over the past 3 years from 45 students to 85 students. This population shows no signs of decreasing with corporate businesses bringing in foreign consultants for work. Their children are currently schooled in our building and we are trying our best to educate them in best practices while maintaining their cultural differences. Any instructional activities to aid in this process would benefit not only the ELL student, but give the English only student a new perspective on other cultures around the world.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students would study other educational systems around the world along with the cultures. Students would demonstrate how to write a script from draft to final copy, calculate the cost of production from idea to product in hand, learn to interview, read materials about other countries, etc.
Follow-Up
Students would review the video on a yearly bases. This will provide an opportunity to update any staff changes, school improvements, and other needs not yet addresses in the current video.

The ability to share this video with potential students would also be a future goal.
