Order of operations lesson plan

Objective: Students will learn the steps to solve problems using Order of Operations.

Materials:
Order of operations worksheet
Order of operations sheet for interactive notebook with PEMDAS
Hover Cam

Procedure: Students will be given the worksheet to include in their interactive notebook. I will explain the steps to successfully complete the worksheet regarding PEMDAS, how to remember it (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) and will give the students a sample problem to include in their notebooks. While working on this sample problem i will use the Hovercam to project the sample problem as I complete it. I will have the students help me complete the problem by stating which step comes next etc.
After completing the sample problem I will give out a order of operations worksheet. I will use the Hover Cam to project this worksheet and work through a problem or two with the students so they can see the steps that are needed to complete the problems.
After the students work through one of the problems, students will be able to use an activslate in order to show the class via the Hover Cam how to solve one problem before assigning similar problems for students to complete at home for homework.
I also plan to use the hovercam to record a video of me working through the steps needed work through a problem using Order of Operations. I will then post the video on Edmodo so that the students will have access to this while at home trying to complete their homework.

Assessment: I will assess their knowledge of the order of operations by monitoring individual work as well as having them work through problems as a whole group. Students will work together to self-correct their own work as well as the work of their peers. After several days of practice with various different problems through individual and whole group instruction I will give a short 5 question quiz on order of operations. After completing the quiz, students will create their own problems and use their own 5 question quiz to test each other. Students will use the Hover Cam to teach the rest of the class the steps of their own problems and assess the class on their own quizzes.

The Hover Cam will assist in engaging the students and giving them more skills in the use of technology in their own classrooms.
Comments
We believe that this can differentiate instruction and provide rigor to our MIID program.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Create problems that would reflect other functional life skills that would include word problems such as "you get a speeding ticket and in order to know how much to pay for the ticket, you have to calculate the base fine, then the per mile fee for the speed over the limit."
Follow-Up
Having students identify some problems in which these principles could be applied to functional life skills.
