My students are all currently placed in my middle-school comprehensive Autism unit at a high poverty school. More than half of the students are non-verbal or have significant speech impairments and are unable to voice their contributions to classroom discussions.

An iPad will give voices to these students so they can finally share their thoughts, ideas, and opinions with the group. My students need an iPad (in addition to a case and a screen protector) to share in class to help them engage in discussion through speech-generating applications.

My students will share this iPad with one another and use it to provide responses to questions during academic instruction. Instead of me always reading an answer they may have selected for them, an iPad with speech generating technology will allow them to have their own voice independent of me. My students will be able to provide responses to all content areas from Math to Language Arts, from reading to Science and Social Studies.

My project will allow these students to finally be able to experience not only independence but freedom from having someone else constantly speaking for them. This project will help change the way they communicate within the classroom environment. They will no longer have their teacher speaking for them, they will control when and what is said within the classroom. This project will give my students a sense of pride!
