At a school where so many of our families come from poverty, students have a lot riding against them. It is the job of their teachers to prepare them to be lifelong learners. They crave information and it is up to the educators to present it to them in a way where they are not only learning, but also having fun while doing so.
The children at East Dover Elementary School are kind, knowledge hungry and expressive students. All of our students have the opportunity to receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite all of the roadblocks that get in the way, our school is one of the best schools around! My grade level team works so well together and the students are great to be around. They truly do want to succeed!
My grade level team is lucky enough to have six desktop computers in each classroom, as well as a computer lab in the school. The only problem is, the amount of funding to provide quality websites for our students has become less and less. This past school year we were lucky enough to have a school-wide subscription to IXL. Even the most uninterested student has thoroughly enjoyed what IXL has to offer. I would love to continue IXL into next year. The students use IXL during their technology related arts time, math and literacy centers, RTI time, and during morning arrival. This website allows my students to "work at their level." It reaches all types of learners because it is "fun," but it also reteaches the students what they get wrong. The best thing about this website is that they can access it from home also!
Fundraising for this project is for an IXL subscription for math and language arts for my grade level. This will enhance the lives of approximately 70 students. We work really hard to bridge the gaps that they face educationally. The donations will allow us to make this process a little easier. The students enjoy the challenge and it makes even the most uninterested, unmotivated student want to work!
