When was the last time a Colorado classroom visited the Great Wall of China? The Moon? My name is Kelsey Yearick and I am trying to raise funds to bring Google Expeditions to the schools of RE-1 Valley. This program will bring over 300 locations, cultural experiences, and career environments - including the Great Wall and Moon - to our district’s classrooms through teacher-guided virtual reality field trips. This project is being supported by the RE-1 Valley Foundation.
I have created a tentative proposal on how this tool can be implemented as a shared resource for RE-1 teachers second grade and up. I presented the proposal to both the Foundation board and school board. Both groups have encouraged me to move forward with fundraising.
At this time, we are raising funds for one Google Expeditions kit from Best Buy Education. This kit will be accessible to ALL 2-12 teachers in RE-1 after they complete a brief training and schedule their field trip online. One kit costs $10,000 and includes the following:
30 Mattel View-Master Virtual Reality Student Viewing Devices ($29.99 each)
30 Student Devices ($243.99 each)
1 Teacher Device ($99.99)
1 Router - Allows program to run independent from internet ($135.99)
Device chargers ($34.99)
Heavy duty Pelican case with custom padded insert to house all materials while being transported between schools ($1,000)
Support services for life of electronic devices (valued at $19.99/device)

Based on 2015-2016 Colorado Department of Education data, this program has the potential to impact over 1,500 students.

I have decided to help bring this program to all of RE-1 because I believe it’s important for the many rural, low income students in our district. As I approach my fifth year of teaching iat RE-1, I’ve come to realize that many of our students have no concept that there are other parts of the world besides Iliff, Sterling, and Crook. The more we expand their horizons and open them to the idea of the world as a whole, the more I feel like they will perceive their hopes and dreams to be limitless.
