North Middle School is not a Title 1 school and in order to be competitive today, our students require the essential technological opportunities to be immersed in 21st century learning experiences that are rigorous and relevant. The acquisition of technology will allow for my middle school students to ask meaningful questions, design procedures, generate data, create and critique models, utilize software to analyze data, engage in argument that is based on evidence, and communicate conclusions founded upon established research to propose solutions to real world higher level problems and issues. The pupils will have the opportunity to operate the vital and compulsory tools that scientists employ because they will have the vital access to simulations, STEM software, and data analysis programs that will challenge their assumptions regarding scientific phenomena as they prepare to become college and career ready.
It cannot be debated that it is imperative for 7th grade science students to have regular access to simulations, research, spreadsheets, and data analysis software. Acquisition of 7 tablets will allow for an emphasis on outdoor instruction. The life sciences, is the central focus of the 7th grade curriculum, and personal experiences connect students to the content with hands-on involvement and skill building. To have the technological means to perform these activities outside, my pupils’ comprehension and long-term retention of concepts will increase substantially, because nature is the laboratory of biological engagement and it is unequivocally underutilized.
Once funding is secured and this modernized methodology is piloted, there will be a concentration on enriching these relevant engagement lessons accordingly after pre-test and post-test data has been collected and analyzed from the students experiences in being immersed in the scientific practices applying technological means. These lessons will be shared, reflected upon to enhance best practices, and further collaborated on for next steps with grade-level colleagues to best impact the greatest number of learners.
Thus, my desired goal is for a total of 7 tablets, which will permit for a tablet to be shared among each group of 4 students since it will outfit a class of 24 pupils, in addition to the educator with the same device to streamline instruction. Therefore, while my end goal is to obtain one-to-one computer access for all students (24) in each class at the same time for a total of 24 computers, servicing 120 individual students daily. I have elected to request 7 tablets which is just enough equipment that my students can begin the process of keeping up with our neighboring communities and enter the 21st century learning community, which begins with one donation at a time.

Why I Teach: I deem it important to allow young people to have a hands-on experience in STEM and gain a fundamental understanding of how the phenomena of the universe works that is the beauty of their world that surrounds them. My hope is that more young people will choose and be prepared for careers in STEM related fields after their experience in my 7th grade classroom.
