With the challenges presented by school closures due to COVID-19, some students are at a greater disadvantage than others because they do not have devices that will help teachers "see" and "guide" them during instruction. In particular, young children, who rely on using manipulative materials for math and phonics struggle to communicate their thinking and process. Students who are younger and also have fewer resources are particularly vulnerable in the school closure context. The gaps that exist seem to widen.
To offset these gaps in access and learning , I plan to purchase several document cameras to lend to students in need. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to use and will allow teachers to see and guide students who are working remotely and trying to use manipulative materials for language arts and math. For those students who are already disadvantaged, these devices will make a difference between success and joy in learning and frustration and failure.
