• Specific Procedures:
• I will start the lesson by asking the students “what are some ways we study geography, or the world”
• Once we have discussed different ways people study the world I will introduce the six elements of studying geography.
• Students will read the exerts on Pg 2-3
• #1 The World in Spatial Terms, #2 Places and Regions, #3 Physical Systems, #4 Human Systems, #5 Environment and Society, #6 The Uses of Geography
• There will be a small amount of time for discussion
• As a class we will begin the motivational activities.
• If any extra time, have students create a graphic organizer of the six (6) elements.
• Motivational Activity:
#1 Student’s will create a map of how they got from home to school. The map should include major roads and landmarks. #2 Discuss how depending on the place or region you live in your clothing and lifestyle will vary. Have students talk about a favorite region and give information. #3 Ask how physical systems affect their lives Ex. Hurricane. #4 Call on students to share where their ancestors moved from and talk about why. #5 Have students give examples of ways people have altered or modified the environment we live in. #6 Have students give examples of how people use geography.
• Closure:
We will close the class by doing picking our top three for the day. Three students will share what piece of information is most important. I will give a quick intro into the lesson for tomorrow (Using Maps and Globes)
