Birney Elementary School
Hometown:
Smyrna, GA by way of Albany, GA
Class Information:
Room Number: 204
Students per Class: 18
Class Description:
I teach in a Title 1 school. To put it in the simplest way, this means that a large percentage of students live in a family whose financial status puts them at or below the poverty level. Most of families can not afford the $24 per month for lunches, much less the $45 average per child per year for in-house and off campus field trips. Our demographics are forever changing with our transient population, but we have about 50% hispanic, 40% african-american and 10% everything else.
Position:
teacher
Needs:
We've been able to get Activboard and LCD projectors through a 21stCentury classroom grant, but that is more instructional. The kids cant get their hands on the applications to utilize them individually. MP3, digital cameras, and camcorders are sturdy and portable. They allow the children a wider range of applications both for the children and the staff.
My Philosophy:
Public school was created as a means of generating a population who would be involved and productive members of society. I believe in keeping that ethic alive while expanding their academic experiences. These days technology opens a plethera of virtual opportunities the children would not normally experience in the home. Our citizens today need to know how to think for themselves as much as they need to know how to act.
Personal Information:
About Me:
After retiring early from UPS, I worked at Sprint in various departments. I wound up training adults in fashion both times. I decided that I'd follow in my mother's footsteps and teach. My children were beginning school and I noticed that their teachers had difficulty explaining "why" things were not going well, or answering my questions of how to help. They just said "get a tutor".
College and Degrees:
BS Marketing- Georgia State Certification and Master's in Reading - Mercer-Tift College of Education-Atlanta Acceptedto the PhD Curriculum and Instruction Program - Mercer
Activities:
When I'm not at school, on the computer doing research, or playing with my new 2 year old-- I sleep!
Favorite Books:
"There are rocks in my socks said the ox to the fox" by Patricia Thomas. Not a well known book, but it rhymes and the pictures-- well, some days around Christmastime at UPS, I felt like the ox.
Favorite Quotes:
"I represent that remark!" - Garfield ( the cat- not the president :)
Interests:
Improving my instruction by utilizing technology for differentiation.
Employment History:
UPS- 5 years Sprint - 9 years Teaching - 6 years Mom- 15 years
Why Do I Teach?:
This is my 3rd career. I decided that after 14 years in Corporate America, working my way up to a supervisor level in my 1st 2 careers, that what I really enjoyed was teaching. And let's face it, if you have to choose between training a grumpy 20-something year old in a stuffy cubicle,or a watching a 7 year old's eyes pop when they 1st hear about Thomas Jefferson's macaroni machine, well, teaching is "funner"! Oh, and you can't beat the bonuses! I get AT LEAST 10 hugs a day. Just try that around the water cooler.
