One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab Page Views: 9966
|
Focus: The teacher will read a book called One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab. This is a children's picture book that counts feet. For example one is a crab, two is a person, three is a person and a crab, four is a dog, five is a crab and a dog, six is an insect, etc.
The book goes on to describe larger numbers, for example: eighty is ten spiders or eight crabs.
The teacher will read the book under the document camera to ensure that all students can see and count the feet.
Guided Practice: The class will work to prove the author right. The student will draw out an example from the book such as twenty is five dogs, or ten people and write about how that is true! The student will use mathematical concepts to justify the author's reasoning.
Independent Practice: The students will choose their own number (not shown in the book) and create a pictoral representation of that number. For example a child might choose a number like twenty-four and state that the number is twelve people or three dogs! The students will illustrate a page to be put in a class book, with their justification(showing the math) on the back.
Closure: The students will come up to the document camera and share their pictures and explain their mathematical process.
The student will journal about how this book shows real life mathematical connections. |

This is an activity that can be adapted to multiple grade levels and can be used during different units throughout the year. During place value it is used to show the base ten system. During addition subtraction it shows the different composition of numbers. As we continue into multiplication, the different compositions represent the different arrays that can be built for the same number. This activity will be used over and over, each time using different mathematical concepts and expressions, and each time becoming more complex. |
Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
Incorporating art, technology, literacy, and writing. |
Follow-Up |
This activity will be spiraled into multiple units, each time applying the concept to the current mathematical unit of study. |
