Objective: Students will study Jerry Spinelli's writing style and use of figurative language techniques.

After the students complete the Novel they will work on a webquest that researches the author's style and use of figurative language. The students will then create their own story in the same style using Google Docs Presenter.

Process:

1) Read the novel Maniac Magee.

2) Complete the Webquest on Maniac Magee.

WEBQUEST Steps:

-Read the links and answer discussion questions about Jerry Spinelli
-Learn and understand different figurative languages techniques by completing an activity for each technique.
-Read several different excerpts from Jerry Spinelli's novels and analyze the techniques he uses. Download and complete the discussion questions.
-Write a short story from the perspective of one of the characters in Maniac Magee. The student is to write in the voice and style of Jerry Spinelli.

- Now using Google Docs Presenter rewrite your story and add images and pictures to add interest.


3) We then read each student's project as a class and posted the student's projects to her website for their parents to see.

Read other authors' books and compare and contrast different authors' styles and techniques!

Research other famous authors' styles and techniques, and do more of your own writing, modeling after those styles and techniques!

Using one of your favorite books, try creating your own illustrations, based on that author's style of writing!
