I first asked students to bring in their favorite stuffed animal to class. We then discussed how they would get in line to go to lunch. We talked about how if was easy for us beacsue we use ABC order but that it wasn;t so easy for the stuffed animals becasue they didn't have last names. So we talked about how we would call on them to get in line.
If students don't say "Put (bear) first", then engage them to think in those terms. We started calling each animal in order using teh ordinal numbers.
As a class I asked questions like, Who is second in line? and "Who is eighth in line?.
When students were confortable with the ordinal numbers and how they go, I split the class in 2 groups of 12. I got my digital camera ready and started recording them as they passed in front of the camera and they said the ordinal number their stuffed animal was. They were excited to be on video, especially with their animal. This was also good for those that do not like to talk, they were able to use teh stuffed animal to cover thier face as they spoke thier order.
We then added the final video to out class webpage for them to see.
