In a combined English and US History class, students will work and research important events in American history, state history and town and school to combine these events into an interactive calendar that can be viewed on the school website as well as to be used to promote our town.

As a class, we will develop guidelines for historical documentation for each area of research. For example, we will have to limit the number of facts from each era, or choose only certain areas on which to focus. When guidelines are set, each student will work to research accurate historical events that happened nationally and locally and combine this information on a whiteboard setting. After that information is gathered, students will then begin the creation of the interactive calendar.

Ideally, the calendar will use an "on this day..." method where each day would have a thumbnail that, when clicked, will link a viewer to more information. This information will be compiled by the students and will include facts, photographs, quotes, stories told by local residents and music. School history will also be incorporated into the calendar and will include facts about the building, key figures as well as quotes from past and present teachers. Students will work with town officials to include important facts about the incorporation of our town and key places in the area.

Students will benefit from developing research skills and the technology needed to create such an in-depth project.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The research for this project could easily be incorporated to include other curriculum areas such as science and math. This could become a school wide project when multiple areas could be covered in the same calendar date.
Follow-Up
When created, the class will be able to present their final project to town and state leaders.
