What Kind of Community? Page Views: 333
|
Students will listen to a version of "City Mouse, Country Mouse" and we will talk about the country and the city. Students will discuss what they have seen on trips to the city and the country. A list of these items will be written on the board. We will then talk about things we see in our community (a suburb) and list those in a separate column on the board. Students will watch a short video on unitedstreaming.com or brainpop.com about the different kinds of communities. The following day we will review the names of the three kinds of communities. Students will look at pictures from Google Earth that are projected onto the SMARTboard. Students will circle things that they see in each community (skyscrapers, houses, barns, etc.) and we will review which community is portrayed in each picture. Create a venn diagram with students comparing rural and urban (since they are the most different). For an assessment, students will use Kidspiration "supergroupers" to create pictures sorting objects into rural, urban, and suburban boxes. |

Cross-Curriculum Ideas |
This lesson can be extended into writing by having students write what it would be like to live in a different kind of community than the one we live in. They can also discuss population for math by looking at a census report. Various books that have settings in different communities can also be read and discussed. Students can make 3d models of the different kinds of communities. |
