First, I show students winning PSAs on www.youtube.com/towerofyouth (a student film contest).

They use critical thinking in groups to brainstorm why the PSA was effective or not.

Students go to www.quotationspage.com and research a quote or topic they feel is important.

Students have come up with this ongoing list of topics that are important to them:

Topics:

Recycling on campus and at home

Using "green" technologies

Wear your seatbelt.

Donate blood.

Common courtesy goes a long way.

Manners (on a date, eating)

Date Rape

Anti-drug (can be general or specific)

Anti-drinking

Anti-smoking

DUI>
Cheating

Cellphones

mp3 players

Fighting (working out differences)

hazing

words can hurt

random acts of kindness

Eating healthy

obesity

eating disorders

abuse in a relationship (verbal, emotional, physical)

read instead of watching TV or playing video games

tutoring/helping students academically

water conservation

tolerance

online predators

voting

flu season, not getting sick

illegal downloading

save the whales (insert endangered specie here)

stay in school (dropouts)

speeding

carpooling, saving gas, ride a bike

Once a topic is chosen, a storyboard must be completed.

Students learn film composition, editing, and audio skills with this project!

We then submit them to the festivals and play them for our school. Constructive criticism will help these budding filmmakers grow.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This can mesh with any subject. Awareness is the goal, so the PSA format works well.
