The community surrounding your students provides a rich abundance of opportunities to discuss history, current events, architecture, mathematics and more!

Community Partners: Historical Society, Architectural firms, Scientists, Engineers,
Carpenters, etc.

TASK ONE:
Partner with the Art teacher to discuss digital imagery and composition. Teach students how to use a digital camera e.g., zoom, switch to sepia, etc.

TASK TWO:
Take students on 2-3 short field trips around the area. Vary your traveling choices to include walking and or traveling by bus. The purpose of the field trips is to gather as much visual information about the area as possible. Encourage students to look carefully at all aspects of the structures in their community e.g., rooftops, architecture, statues, doorways, rails, signs, etc.

TASK THREE:

Students convene and brainstorm how the images could be used e.g.,
--partner with historical society to do a compare and contrast of the community
50 years ago to recent images
--invite architects or engineers to review the images and explain the math behind
the structures
--partner with local artists/art teacher/ analyze line, color, proportion, etc.

TASK THREE:

Each photo team compiles a photo album of no less than 10 photos.
The authentic and personal photos will be utilized throughout the year to support the study of a variety of grade level appropriate skills embedded in the math, science, social studies, and art standards.
