School: Leighton Elementary School, Oswego, NY
Planned By: Michele Scoville
Original Author: Michele Scoville, Oswego
I have had this idea for several years but lack the technology to complete it. the 'Buc" is our district's mascot .
Overview: Art Students (grades 4-6) will work collaboratively creating a video with each other. Each student will have 3 consecutive scenes-object enters, move with object, object exits. The next student will grab the object from student 1 and do their three scenes, and will continue until we have a class video. Students will be researching Students will need to plan exit and entry scenes together and work on being problem solvers with ideas and creativity.
Subject Matter: Students will need to work in teams of 3-5 students and research international landmarks. Each team will be given a country and will complete a webquest to discover what a landmark is and why that landmark is important to that culture. They will also need to create an object to pass. Depending on grade (and material background) they will create a replica of an significant cultural object (Objects will be reviewed in webquest). Students will use their landmark as a backdrop to their video(each student gets one landmark in that country, so 3-5 landmarks per team). Students can create costume to represent their country as well. Each student will be responsible for telling one to two facts about their national landmark during their scene.
Day 1- Introduce project, assign teams, select country, review computer use rules and begin country based webquest.
Day 2- Complete webquest, begin designing cultral replica.
Day 3- WOrk on cultural replica/selecting your images of your landmark/plan entry, move and exit of object
Day 4- Begin working with Flip camera, review use shoot half the scenes today

Day 6-Work on computers and superimposing body into landscape.
Day 7-WOrk on computers

Comments
As an art teacher who teaches K-6 this would be the ultimate project with the flip camera. We would do some introductory mini projects to help understand them and build on their knowledge each year.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
I would collaborate with grade level classroom teacher to develop a interdiscplinary project. For example-4th grade covers NYS, so we would do NYS landmarks, 5th grade covers the United States, we would do United States Landmarks, and 6th grade covers world history and we would do international landmarks. I could incorporate music and have the music teacher help us with this part as well.
Follow-Up
Students would continue to use their new found knowledge on future projects. This video would be ran on our school channel. Students will use flip cameras more independently for future projects. After initial introduction students would use them as a device to record progress on a project and creation of a digital portfolio.
