In our weekly "Reading Buddy" program, the middle school students work with the 4th grade struggling readers. The program's mission (written by my students) is "To help ourselves and our Reading Buddies attend, engage and achieve more!"
One facet of the tutoring program is fluency building activities, which include partner and choral reading, and reader's theater. In order to "rehearse" for a student's part in the reader's theater - they all take turns practicing their parts while their reading buddy records them on the Flip camera. The budies then review the recording together, and critiiique the "performance" while reviewing the script. Together they make notes, practice words that were missed, and then on to "Take Two". The budies practice over the course of a three day tutoring cycle (15-20 minutes each session) and then the whole group performs the play on Friday while the teacher records. The class can then then enjoy the entire performance together, or share with other classes.
The ability to partner the students and the use of technology keeps all the students excited, engaged, and motivated to improve. |
