School: OWMS, Los Angeles, CA
Planned By: Paula Cohen
Original Author: Paula Cohen, Los Angeles
The project begins by building student knowledge of the issue of waste reduction by a variety of sources:
- A video source "The Story of Stuff" which describes the life cycle of a product from extraction to disposal)
-A web interview with an expert in the field of waste management(filmed for additional viewing)
- Text source- articles on waste trends, etc.
-Conducting an actual waste audit on school campus to collect real data
Students learn standard research protocols: citing sources, taking notes, paraphrasing, etc. but rather than writing a research report, they work in groups to create products for a class developed website.
Students use various online software programs like Animoto ( slide show with music and text using video and photos), Moviemaker 3 (video editing software), Pixton comics ( a comics software), and Glogster ( a site for creating online posters with graphics, video and photos) to convey their research and create a product to post on the webpage.
Students also compose one research paragraph that they read to the video camera and create a loop of collective research presentation that will be embedded onto the site as well.
Students then share the website on their social media networks and email the link to family and friends and expand their readership and viewing.
