Objectives: The students will:
As a group, share ideas about what the students Know, Want to, want to Do, and Learned.
Each student bring something from home (that is related to science fiction), to present to the group, and take questions and comments from their peers.
Using the Flip-video camera, the class will create a “movie trailer” for a pretend science fiction movie. They will research, develop a story line, and story line for the clip. They will split into small groups and create a scene, complete with special effects and costumes. As a whole group we will edit the piece and add music.
Create a unique science fiction story.
Learn the eight planets and read information about the solar system.
Read the definition of “light year” and about the relative size of Jupiter.
Have a class discussion of adaptations and food chains. Then relate it to fictional creatures on other planets.
Fill out a character map of an alien of their creation.
Draw an "alien" of their design.
Watch the video of the classic Star-trek “The Menagerie” and the Twilight Zone episode “The Invaders”.
Define several science fiction terms in a glossary.
Read a synopsis of The Time Machine by HG Wells.
Identify characters, events, and setting of several science fiction stories.
Listen to the original 1938 radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles.
Maintain a journal of the activities and learned concepts from the unit.
