School: Jane Addams Elementary School, Palatine, IL
Planned By: Annette Mongoven
Original Author: Annette Mongoven, Palatine
Students will participate in the planting and care of the Amaryllis bulb. Each student will journal predictions, measurements, observations, and personal ancedotes in their journals.

This extended lesson combines math, science, and language arts. Students will share and discuss what they have written in their journals. With the aid of technology, the students will be able to record the growth and changes of the Amaryllis, as well as their classmates reactions to the experience.

This Amazing Amaryllis is so much more than a science lesson. Many of our third grade students speak another language as their first language, and this lesson awards them the opportunity to interact with their fellow monolingual classmates in a way that only a motivated student can. The teacher plays the part of facilitator, and the students learn through the hands on activity.

materials:
Amaryllis Bulb (available at Home Depot in the late fall)
spiral notebooks for journals
Flip Camera (recording plant growth and student reactions)
Time Span: from December through April, just in time for the switch to outdoor gardening
Comments
I have been doing the Amazing Amaryllis lesson for around 5 years now. I realized through technology that this lesson could be so much more interesting and effective. I am enthusiastic about learning how to use the technology available to me to create motivating, effective lessons.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This lesson requires students to use math, science, and language arts skills.
Follow-Up
The students can compare and contrast other bulb plants, as well as plants started with seeds. Many of the students have expressed interest in creating narratives about our Amaryllis.
