Week One

Students were introduced to Greek mythology with activities relating to the popular series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The introductory chapter to The Lightning Thief was read to the class. By the end of the period each student had selected a character from Greek mythology to research.

Week Two

Students were instructed on how to use Inspiration as a means of capturing their research on their character from Greek mythology. They were asked to find details on three areas - 1. Characteristics (kind, jealous, loving, vengeful, etc.; what they did that made them famous), 2. Appearance (how they are frequently portrayed) 3. Family (brothers, sisters, father, mother, etc.) A Works Cited was also part of the Inspiration diagram to reinforce the need to cite information sources.

Week Three

Continued research and completed Inspiration diagram. If they were finished they began writing an informative paragraph, a poem, monologue, or dialogue about their character.

Week Four

Introduction to Windows Movie Maker. They found pictures on the web to include in the movie and worked on title slides and credits. (If selected for this contest I would get students to draw pictures for inclusion in the video based on the research they gathered on the appearance of their character). We shared the Flip camera during this period to record what they wrote during week three so that the video could be incorporated into the movie.

Week Five
Wrap up and show time.
Comments
Students enjoyed working on this project for many reasons. They liked learning about the characters in Greek mythology, it allowed them to use their creativity, and they learned some basics about movie making.
