MATERIALS NEEDED:
Strega Nona
Flip Videos
DVDs
Graphic Organizers
Socratic Questioning Cards
Writing Folder
This will be a 1 to 2 week lesson plan (First week reading and discussion with graphic organizers. Second week writing the next chapter and performance of skit for video).
Day 1:
1. Teacher will read aloud “Strega Nona” while the students follow along. The teacher will ask H.O.T. questions and the students will make notes in their writing folder.
2. The students will make predictions and make connections text-to-self, text-to-world, text-to-text.
Day 2:
1. Teacher will complete the read aloud of “Strega Nona” asking H.O.T. questions and the students will make notes in their writing folder.
2. The students will work in groups to complete a SWBS graphic organizer (Attachment No. 1).
Day 3
1. The students will participate in a Socratic round table. (The teacher is the facilitator and will use questions below (see attachment 2) to facilitate the discussion but the students should take over with their talking asking questions based on answers, piggybacking etc.) This may take some time to get used to but the students will tend to participate and actively join in. There are ground rules: Be respectful of each other. Do not talk over each other. No remarks that tend to hurt others.
Day 4
1. The students work in groups to start writing the next book of “Strega Nona” by brainstorming within their groups.
2. The students will write a cartoon of it in their writing folders.
Day 5
1. The students will write a script for a skit depicting the next book of “Strega Nona”.
2. The students will correct their script using appropriate punctuation and paragraphing.
Week 2
Day 1 – Each group will write their script making sure that they are true to the story line. Each group will have a conference with the teacher to make sure they are staying on track.
Day 2 – Each group will practice their scripts and make props for their skit.
Day 3 – Continue making props and practicing.
Day 4 – Videotaping starts.
Day 5 – The students will learn to import their video into moviemaker and make a DVD of their skit.
ASSESSMENT:
1. The written and videotaped skit will be turned in for a grade as a group.
2. Participation in the Socratic Round table will be graded (students must talk at least 3 times but no more than 6, give each student 3 markers and when their markers are gone they have met the requirement).
3. The graphic organizer must be complete.
DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION:
1. Students will be placed in groups using cooperative grouping. The students will be placed so they can help each other in reading and comprehension.
2. The teacher will work in small groups with each group to ensure all students are learning and understanding the processes as well as assessing comprehension.
DOCUMENTATION:
One written skit with video will be submitted to Digital Wish with lesson plans and a teacher reflection of the lesson.
