PROJECT DURATION: 12 class periods

STANDARDS:

OVERALL PROCEDURES:
Students will identify and analyze major battles of the Civil War and their results using various research materials as well as developing a bibliography.
Students will work in small cooperative groups to create and design movie script and sets for the presentation of the assigned battle.
Students will use Flip Video Cameras to create their Civil War Battle Movie and then edit production using Windows Live Movie Maker.
Students will present finalized videos in order for classmates to expand their understanding of the Civil War Battles.

MATERIALS:
5 Flip Video Cameras
Teacher produced video: “Overview of Civil War Battle War Movie Project”
Websites for researching Civil War Battles
Large plastic folders for each group that included blank index cards, Civil War Flip Video Rubric, Graphic Organizer of project over
Windows Live Movie Maker 2007
Image and Sound resources
Various Props
Interactive Whiteboard, LCD Projector, computers

PROCEDURES:
1. Present teacher created video called “Overview of Civil War Battle War Movie Project” to introduce students to movie project objectives.
2. Divide class into small collaborative groups of 3 or 4 students. Students will determine Production Team role; Production Manager, Computer Technician, Videographer.
3. Distribute Civil War Flip Video rubric for grading project with discussion.
4. Each group develops a Project Overview that summarizes the format, setting, and props.
5. Citation of all sources used will be maintained in Civil War Battle Bibliography document stored in student network folder.
6. Students will write the dialogue on sequential index cards as it will be presented in movie production. Writing must include rubric requirements. Cards are submitted to instructor for review.
7. Students will develop an intriguing movie introduction to entice the audience.
8. Students will assemble and create props.
9. Students will use Flip Video cameras to compose and execute video.
10. Instruction will be given to students on the use of Windows Live Movie Maker and the use of copyright friendly images and sound files.
11. Students will use Windows Live Movie Maker to edit video.
12. The final culmination of the project is the presentation of each video to classmates.

Comments
Not only was this a learning experience for both the teachers and students, it motivated us to stretch our imagination, talents, and skills in a creative and exciting journey into new technology.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Props and scenery completed in Art class. Sound effects and creation of own music completed in Music class. Script developed in Creative Writing class. Library Media Center utilized for research. Additional research resources explored in Reading class.
Follow-Up
Compose own music using online resources and software music programs. Utilize skills learned to critique videos. Extend our outreach program to include student produced videos that will show positive impact on our community and world.
