Responding to your Artwork
Grades 7-12

Objective: Students will be able to articulate the creative process they used to create
their work of art.
Students will be able to explain and defend the visual choices they made
when creating their artwork.
Students will be able explain the merits and weaknesses of their finished
artwork.

Materials: Flip Video Camera
Tripod
Easel
Computer with video editing softwear and internet access.

Procedure: Students will work in pairs to record each others response statement before the video camera.

Upon completion of art project, students are given a worksheet with guide questions to direct them in critiquing and responding to their own artwork. This worksheet will allow student to reflect on their creative process and the merits and weaknesses of their work. When both students have completed their reflection sheet they will be ready to begin the video taping process.

Set aside a video taping area within the classroom or in some other quiet space in the school.

Set Flip Video camera on a tripod. Have the artwork that the student will discuss set up on an easel or a table near where the student will speak. Make sure there is adequate lighting and that there is little background noise.

Each student takes turn discussing and critiqing their artwork while the other student video tapes the statement.

Completed videos are downloaded and edited using a program such as IMovie. Edited movies are uploaded to the class webpage.

Class members are each assigned three or four classmates videos to watch. They are to post responses to each student's artwork as a means of providing feedback for further growth and development as an artist.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This same process could be used in any subject areas where students complete projects or writing that uses the creative process.
