Overview
5th grade students will work together to compose a video highlighting events that our school participates in from grade level to school wide.
• Students will brainstorm activities that Elsa Meyer students participate
in.
• They will meet with the high school communication students to see
how a newscast is assembled from brainstorming to final product.
• Students will go through a mini-lesson focused on interview etiquette
• Students will be partnered up to select an area of interest to investigate
and report on.
• They will interview and write a rough draft script, edit, and be ready for
production.
• Students will sign-up for a time to record their area of interest. They will
use a Flip camera.
• We will also have a weeks worth of lessons on how to work and edit the
digital recordings and make a video of highlights.
• Students and I will then be able to work together to compose a short
video series highlighting important events held in the classroom and
as a whole school. We could even make it a “contest” for the best to be
placed online.
• For the finished product, it will be posted on Elsa Meyer’s site on the
CPS website.

Learning Goals and Objectives
• Students will think how they can best represent Elsa Meyer and all the neat activities we as a school takes part in.
• By working cooperatively, they will be able to bounce ideas off each other to grow with their technology skills as well as language arts skills.
• Students will be working across the curriculum by working with language arts, school history, as well as technology
• They will have an opportunity to have a hands on approach from using the Flip camera, downloading the video, and creating a video by importing the file using Windows Movie Maker
• They will use their creativity to develop a short video displaying the school’s activities. By doing this it will give them a sense of pride with their work

Materials Needed
• Video production worksheet
• Storyboard handouts
• Computers and laptops with Internet
• Flip Cameras

Procedure
Week One
• Students will receive an introduction to our Video Production project
• We will brainstorm together the activities in which our school participates
• Students will be paired with a classmate to complete the project
• They will come together to decide which they would like to film
• They will share with me their initial ideas for filming
• We will view the website, KidsVid.org, to see the steps in video production
• They will have a mini lesson on interviewing etiquette. they will then complete an outline of questions they will ask.

Week Two
• We will travel with to the high school to visit the mass media class
• They will show our class the functions of the movie maker and how to import files, incorporate transitions, and give other video tips.
We will then go back to our classroom and begin to work and edit mock digital recordings and make a video of highlights.

Week Three and throughout the year
• Filming begins. This will be an ongoing activity throughout the year. As functions of the school arise, students will use the Flip camera to shoot different video angles of the activity. They will also interview the main person of the activity along with participants of the activity.
• Once the video has been captured, students will download to the computer and will begin to import into the movie maker. As the students compile the video clips, they will create a short video that features all of the cool activities we do. Students will be asked to keep a running video and to have it submitted to the principal for display on the lobby television along with possibly posting on our school website.

Throughout this activity, students will be graded on participation, cooperation, and video technique.
