School: Southeast Neighborhood School of Excellence, Indianapolis, IN
Planned By: Eric Strolberg
Original Author: Eric Strolberg, Indianapolis
Objectives:
1. Students will research each planet in our solar system and be able to compare it to Earth.
2. Students will create an accurate 3-D model of each planet out of modeling clay.
3. Students will write a script for an animated short movie which teaches viewers about each planet in our solar system.

Procedures:
Phase 1 - The project will begin with the introduction and research portion. Students will be given the rubric and timeline sheets for this project. This will inform them of the expected outcomes and expectations as well as give them the deadlines they will need to meet. Part 2 of phase 1 consists of completing research on each planet. The class will be divided into planet groups and be given the opportunity to research all required information about their planet. Multiple sources, including an interview with an astronomer from a local university.
Phase 2 - Once the research has been completed, the groups will now shift to creating a detailed replica of their planet. All planets will be built to a specific scale. The scale of the planets will be determined by the needs of the movie being filmed in phase 3.
Phase 3 - Once all planets have been built, the groups will reconvene as a whole class and prepare for movie production. All aspects of filming a stop-motion animated movie will be divided up among students.
Group 1 will be in charge of backgrounds and set design. Group 2 will be in charge of the script. Group 3 will be in charge of filming.
Once filming is complete, the movie will be edited and uploaded to school website to be viewed by students, staff and parents and everyone who watches will be entertained and informed at the same time.
Follow-Up
Once movie is completed, the school will hold an assembly for all students for the purpose of watching the video. After viewing, the class will hold a Q&A session with the school about the making of the video, the planets, and any other related topics.
