Green Up the Green Mountains

Objectives:
Students create a movie to capture the essence of green up day in Braintree, Vermont.
Learn all the aspects that go into making a movie (equipment, supplies, procedures).
Learn interviewing skills.

Rationalle:
Vermont has an annual green up day where communities get together and green up their town and neighborhoods. The community of Braintree encourages students to clean up around their homes, the sides of the roads with the hopes of finding "Litter Bugs". The litter bugs are plastic and metal bugs hanging on metal sticks that are placed in the ground but visible. The litter bugs are put in various places the night before by community volunteers. When found, the students can turn in their bugs and receive a prize.

Action Steps:
Students work with community members, families and friends to get rid of litter, learn about ecology and caring for the earth. The purpose of the movie is to showcase all the community efforts and show the movie at our Town Meeting.

Students will work with adults experienced in conducting interviews to learn strategies for having meaningful interviews.
Students and staff will learn about the equipment used in making a movie.

Practice with peers to experience and apply the skills necessary to successfully produce a movie, conduct interviews and then share with the community how important green up day is.
Comments
I personally do not know what goes into making movies. I have introduced the skills for conducting great interviews so I feel so excited about learning new skills with the students.
"I tell you and you forget. I show you and you remember. I involve you and you understand."

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Writing up the interviews. Taking photos of the people interviewed. Researching ecology issues associated with litter. Doing service learning/living projects.
Follow-Up
Sharing the movie with the school, school board and town officials.
Publishing a book with photos and interviews of the community members interviewed.
