School: Portland High School, Portland, TN
Planned By: Michelle Gilliam
Original Author: Michelle Gilliam, Portland
-The Teacher discusses and reviews vertebrates and invertebrates.
-QR codes are placed around the building in various places for students to find.
-After the classroom discussions and lesson overview, students use their smart phones, iPods, or iPads to locate and scan a QR code that has a riddle in it. Students must write down the riddle and the answer before moving on to the next code. Answers come from the 15 vocabulary words for that lesson and chapter in Biology.
-Each QR code gives a clue to the next location. For example QR code 4-I am a vertebrate with four limbs? Your next question should not be hard to "read". Locate me near the entrance door. *Students must figure out the "read" is in the library just inside the entrance door.
-At the last QR code, students are told they found the last clue and are directed to report back to the teacher. There are 15 codes strategically located around the school building.
-Once students return to the classroom, everyone discusses the activity and the answers to the riddles.
-Students are given a participation grade as well as a daily grade for the work completed.
