School: Chillicothe High School, Chillicothe, OH
Planned By: Todd Gilsdorf
Original Author: Todd Gilsdorf, Chillicothe
After spending some time on learning about the 4 Weather Fronts (Cold, Warm, Stationary, Occluded), I will break the classes (4 classes of 20 students) into groups of 4 (about 5 per group). Each group will be given one Weather Front to make a skit, or play, that explains what occurs at the Weather Front. I will give each group one day to research and help each other understand exactly what does occur during their particular Weather Front. Each group will then have a day to write and practice a skit, play about their Weather Front. I will tell the students to use the characters of Cold Air Mass and Warm Air Mass. If the group feels like making a video, I would allow them to use the flip camera to create the video. If they are uncomfortable making a video, then the students can use one of the computers and microphones to create an mp3 of their play. The students will then have 1 more day to create their skit/play. I will be playing these skits/plays to the class. Also, if given parents permission to put their child on the internet, will place these skits/plays on my classroom website.
Comments
-This lesson will help the students understand Weather Fronts. This is always the hardest topic for students to understand each year, so it should put the control in their hands on how to help each other remember.

-Since I am one of the first in my building to attempt using a classroom and podcasts, this lesson should help the others see the impact that podcasts can have on a classroom. This hopefully will lead more to learn how to create podcasts for their classroom.

-Down the road, if this is successful, my plan is to share this with other local school districts where we could create a contest of which school district can create the best video about Weather Fronts.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Language Arts can help as well by working with students on proper acting, play writing, and communication to make the skits/plays the most professional as possible.
Follow-Up
After each group is done with their podcasts (video or sound), the students will then be asked to write a journal entry explaining what they think occurs during each Weather Front based on the other groups performances.
