School: Edward Hynes Elementary School, New Orleans, LA
Planned By: Jonathan Vitale
Original Author: Jonathan Vitale, New Orleans
Approximate Duration
Two 50 minute class to set up the experiments. One month of weathering of object and data collection.

Louisiana Framework
Louisiana Grade Level Expectations (GLEs), Benchmarks, and Common Core Standard (CCS) will be met.
Grade Level Expectations, Common Core Standards and Benchmarks;
14. Distinguish between chemical and mechanical (physical) weathering and identify the role of weathering agents (e.g., wind, water, ice, gravity) (ESS-M-A4)
35. Describe how processes seen today are similar to those in the past (e.g., weathering, erosion, lithospheric plate movement) (ESS-M-B3)
1. Generate testable questions about objects, organisms, and events that can be answered through scientific investigation (SI-M-A1)
2. Identify problems, factors, and questions that must be considered in a scientific investigation (SI-M-A1)
3. Select and use appropriate equipment, technology, tools, and metric system units of measurement to make observations (SI-M-A3)
4. Use consistency and precision in data collection, analysis, and reporting (SI-M-A3)
5. Use computers and/or calculators to analyze and interpret quantitative data (SI-M-A3)
6. Identify patterns in data to explain natural events (SI-M-A4)
7. Develop models to illustrate or explain conclusions reached through investigation (SI-M-A5)

Interdisciplinary Connections
Louisiana History
Earth Science

Objectives
Students will work to collect data in a quantitative and qualitative way.
Students will discover different ways of weathering.
Students will study weathering of everyday objects.

Materials
A common everyday household item.
A smartphone with internet and photo capabilities.
Paper for a data table and a pencil.
Rulers

Technology Connection

Ļ Hardware; Smartphones
Ļ Software; photo app, social media app, and PowerPoint
Ļ Web Sites; www.edmodo.com
Background Information
Students should be able to work with a smartphone. Students should be able to make data table. Students should be able to create their own testable hypothesis.

Lesson Procedures
1. Students are giving a brief lesson (lecture style) on weathering and erosion around the Louisiana gulf coast.
2. Students have brought in everyday inside household items.
3. Students then predict ways weather the objects they brought in.
4. Students will be assigned, randomly, a partner to work with.
5. Each collaborative pair will have to decide who the mud is and who the sun is.
6. The mud will bury half of their object in the mud.
7. The sun will place their object in a place that receives 75% or more of the day¡¦s sunlight.
8. Each collaborative pair will have to take a picture holding their object.
9. Each collaborative pair will have to take a minimum of three pictures a week and upload a status picture (1 of the 3 pictures) to www.edmodo.com/vitaleearthscience .
10. Each collaborative pair will show if any parts of their objects have been weathered
11. Each collaborative pair will be responsible for producing an original quantitative and qualitative data table for their objects (comparing and contrasting).
12. Each collaborative pair will create a PowerPoint presentation on their findings.

Reproducible Materials
A instructional project handout

Assessment Procedures
Check list (one in the beginning and another half way towards the end).
Edmodo status updates
PowerPoint presentations

Exploration and Extension
Students can continue this thought out the whole year.
