School: West Allegheny High School, Imperial, PA
Planned By: Colleen Barnes
Original Author: Colleen Barnes, Imperial
Objective: The students will be able to:
• identify parallel and perpendicular lines in real-world settings;
• determine the equations of the parallel and perpendicular lines

Student engagement: The students work in groups using the cameras on the devices to find real-life examples of parallel and perpendicular lines throughout the classroom and/or school. The students will take pictures of at least 5 examples of each.

Rigor and relevance: The students will enhance the pictures by drawing in the parallel and perpendicular lines. The students will also add a coordinate grid to their pictures and determine equations for the lines.

Differentiated instruction: The students will then create a brief video or other form of presentation featuring their examples of parallel and perpendicular lines along with the definitions of the terms and how to confirm that each set of lines is parallel or perpendicular.

Higher level questioning and discussion Techniques: Each group will then share their video and/or presentation with the rest of the class through Chromecast or Apple TV and the class will discuss each example and determine if each is an actual example of parallel and perpendicular lines.

Formative assessment: During the sharing of the videos the class will be required to participate in a backchannel discussion using Today’s meet to provide feedback to the group presenting.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
We could work with the digital photography classes to take better pictures.

We could work with the geometry classes to expand our knowledge of parallel and perpendicular lines.
Follow-Up
Continue to apply real world examples of parallel and perpendicular lines as we develop our knowledge of what makes lines parallel or perpendicular.
