1. Students will use the Lego WeDo construction set to build the Drawbridge project using the Lego WeDo software.
Students will need kits A and B and a laptop for this project.
The drawbridge will use a motor to rotate a belt-driven pulley. The belt-driven pulley rotates a worm gear. The worm gear rotates a gear and axle to raise and lower the bridge. A motion sensor will raise the drawbridge when an object comes close to it.
2. When making the boat component for this project attach Cubelets that will allow the boat to move when being guided with your hand behind the Cubelets. This will allow the drawbridge to raise when the bridge sensor detects the Cubelets boat coming close to it.
3. Students will then experiment with the sense, think, and act blocks of the Cubelets to make the drawbridge work.
4. Using the Lego Assessment page, students will then label the parts of the drawbridge and describe 3 things they learned while doing this project and one new recommendation they would like to try.
Comments
Students will follow the Lego WeDo software directions step by step when making the drawbridge.
They will get to design their own boat configuration using the Cubelets and Lego WeDo bricks
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Social Studies:Students can research why drawbridges are needed in certain cities for transportation purposes.
English: Students can write a story about knights and princesses and guarding the castle drawbridge from enemies.
Math: Students can time how long it takes for the boat to go under the drawbridge using the different senses of the Cubelets.
Follow-Up
Students can brainstorm on how they can incorporate the Cubelets into the other WeDo Construction projects.
