Generative theme: Learning how to draw and shade the human facial proportions. Be able to create their self-portrait with observational skills with mirrors and add shading techniques previously learned.
Overview (performance of understanding :) Students will use the mirrors to draw a realistic drawing of themselves understanding the facial structure. Concluding with incorporating the shading techniques, proportions and everything we have learned so far.
Understanding goals: We learn about the history of portraiture, the changing dynamics of contemporary portraiture. Learning how to draw correct proportions is the first step towards art and developing as an artist.
ELD/SPED/IEP:
Repeat and copy down vocabulary write instructions and agenda on the board. Meet with student previously to help their facial proportions and any misunderstandings that may appear. Allow them to utilize more time in advisory or during lunch to finish up assignments and finish notes. Utilize a peer buddy to help with following through, preferential seating and one on one practice during studio time.
Timing: About 7-8 Block periods
Vocabulary: Facial proportions, self portrait, symmetry, portraiture, shading for form (value).
Materials and Equipment: Sketchbooks, 12x18 paper, rulers, pencil sets, blending sticks, laptop, projector/tv screen, white board.
Introduction: Demonstrate how to draw correct proportions. Review artists, portraiture and expose to student work, possibilities.
Generative Exercises: In their sketchbooks, create warm ups. Students reflect and draw within their sketchbooks to practice what was demonstrated.
Student’s art work:
1. Take notes, follow along proportion explanation presentation, more artists revealed on screen.
2. Sketch by practicing drawing partners face. Watch video of artists in cultural identity.
3. Learn how to draw and shade each facial feature. Brainstorm ideas of what expression can be.
4. Use mirrors to draw themselves and features.

Comments
By teaching a variety of students, including vision impaired, hearing impaired and just the language learners. Having a screen to be clear, with images to interact students, video tutorials to be played and powerpoint presentations for all students to access would be helpful for my classroom.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This can also be used for AVID program that serves under represented students for college career readiness, as I also teach this subject.
Follow-Up
Continual use of technology exposes students to the real world workforce and schools. Not all the students have access to computers at home, and it is essential to allow students to learn in a clear concise way. This would be helpful by allowing students to see this screen and watch demonstrations, present from these screen and be interactive in their learning.
