School: Malta Bend R-V Elementary, Malta Bend, MO
Planned By: Kasha Oetinger
Original Author: Kasha Oetinger, Malta Bend
-We begin by reading a book called Mapping Penny's World by Loreen Leedy.
-Then we brainstorm what makes a good map.
-I then will then use the document camera to have the children assist me in constructing a map.
-The students will draw on the math unit we have been studying and alternative measurements. They will choose one student from their partner pairs to trace their foot onto card stock paper and cut it out as a means of measurement for this activity.
-The pairs then will construct a map of the classroom and then measure three specific areas in the classroom with their "foot." They will note the measurement on the map.
-Upon completion of their maps the students will come to the document camera one by one and show us their features they found important to put on the map.
-Student groups will also note their measurements on the board as well as use the ruler to measure their "foot" to see what the actual length is.
-The students assignment for the night will be to make a map of their house or room and return to share with the class. They may use their own "foot" or their parents "foot" as a unit of measurement to measure three places in the house to report back to their classmates.
-My assessment of the assignment will be of the classroom map to ensure that all the points we discussed as a class have be addressed.
