Students often struggle with motion because they are asked to imagine what is happening rather than actually see it. In this lesson, students use Go Direct Sensor Carts to collect real-time data and generate graphs that represent motion. This allows them to directly connect physical movement to abstract concepts like velocity and acceleration.

The lesson begins with a short video comparing constant velocity and accelerating motion. Students make predictions about what the motion would look like on a graph and explain their reasoning. This activates prior knowledge and sets a purpose for the investigation.

Students then work in small groups to explore motion using the sensor carts. They test different scenarios, including constant speed, increasing speed, and starting and stopping motion. As they move the carts, they observe how the graphs change in real time. Students record observations, identify patterns, and discuss their findings within their group.

Next, students analyze their graphs and answer guiding questions about slope, shape, and what the graphs represent. They begin to connect their observations to formal physics concepts. The class then comes together for a discussion where students share results and explain their reasoning. The teacher helps solidify understanding by connecting student observations to key ideas about velocity and acceleration.

To increase engagement, students are challenged to create specific types of graphs or match a target graph using the carts. This encourages problem-solving and deeper thinking while keeping the activity interactive and student-centered.

The lesson concludes with an exit ticket where students interpret a graph and describe the motion it represents. This is used to assess understanding and identify any remaining misconceptions.
