I. Standards {SCI.3.4} Predict and anticipate possible outcomes (SCI.3.44} Graph, analyze, and interpret personal and class data SCI.3.49} Describe climate patterns from recorded weather conditions over a period of time
II. Learning Objective: •TLW use the internet to find the temperature of our town each day; TLW record the temperatures for 10 days; •TLW graph the temperatures of each day using Graph Club •TLW write a paragraph describing the weather for 10 days and how the temperature relates to it.
III. Materials Needed: •Internet, a recording sheet, and Graph Club software or online graph interactives.
IV. Lessons •Begin with a KWL chart about different types of weather. •Prepare a powerpoint presentation showing different types of weather/natural disasters. •Discuss areas that are common to certain types of weather. •The students will use a bookmarked website to check the daily weather of our town for 10 days. Once they have checked it each day, they will record it on a chart given to them. •After 10 days, they will take the information recorded and graph it using Graph Club Software, use excel or online interactive. •The finall phase will involve the studentins writing a paragraph explaining the changes in the weather and how it relates to the temperature. •Their graphs and paragraphs will be presented to the class.Students can take digital photos of weather patterns to place in their paragraph.
V. Assessment •The students will be assessed using a rubric which includes each step in the procedure and whether or not it was done correctly. •The students will be in groups of four. The better readers will be the researchers and recorders and the lower readers will prepare the graphs. They will all deliver a part in the presentation.
VI. Extension Activities: •Students could also find the temperatures of different cities in different parts of the country/world. They could write about where they might choose to live and why. •An additional sheet with weather can be downloaded and placed on the computer for students to record information on the computer. |
