Harmon Johnson Elem School
Hometown:
Carson City, Nevada
Class Information:
Room Number: 3
Students per Class: 20
Class Description:
My classroom, like many in California, is very diverse. Last year I had Hmong, Hispanic, African American, Ukranian, Lao, Philipino and Caucasion children.
Position:
teacher
Needs:
English language development, vocabulary development, cultural awareness, social skills
My Philosophy:
All children can learn, but not all in the same way. A variety of modalities must be used to reach all children, and a teacher must have an understanding that children will "get it" at different times.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am considered a "seasoned" teacher with over 43 years of experience working with children in a variety of settings. I have owned and operated my own preschool, and have taught in Montana, Arizona and California. I grew up in Carson City,Nevada and still remember most of my teachers with fondness and the value each one added to my education.
College and Degrees:
BS Oregon State University 1966 MA California State University Sacramento, 1995
Activities:
Actively involved in theTeachers' Associations, serving on the Board of Directors of the National Education Association from 2002-8, president of my local association for 8 years, and 15 years on the California Teachers Association State Council.
Favorite Books:
Historical fiction, murder mysteries, anything really...David Balducci and James Patterson are my current favorite authors.
Favorite Quotes:
Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
Interests:
reading, learning all I can about computers and new technology; creating and publishing workbooks for teachers to use in classrooms.
Employment History:
My own preschool in Montana, 10 years in the Washington School District in Phoenix, AZ, substitute teaching in various districts in and around Sacramento, and 27 years in the North Sacramento/Twin Rivers Unified School Distict.
Why Do I Teach?:
I love watching children grow and learn. Every year is a different year. While I have taught for 43 years and have now been in the same school for 27 years, teaching mostly 1st grade and kindergarten, I have continued to study and learn and to apply new techniques to my teaching. We are now in a digital age only dreamed of in the comic books of my childhood. I never imagined I would become a part of the stories I once read!
