Sharp EL-520 Scientific Calculator, $598.00, 0.00% raised
Sharp EL-520 Scientific Calculator Rank:
Single Unit Why I need this:
In the business math class, students are expected to use calculators to complete complex computations like annual percentage rate, compound interest, and depreciation. Having a class-set of financial calculators would enable me to teach the students how to work these calculations out on one standard platform, which enables the students to focus on understanding the concepts, rather than what button to push.

Tehachapi High School
Hometown:
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Class Information:
Room Number: 1117
Students per Class: 30
Class Description:
This is the Tehachapi High School Robotics Team 585. We've participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 2001. Part of our mission statement includes promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to younger students. Our team of 30 high schoolers, ranging from freshmen to seniors, promotes robotics and technology by giving demonstrations at elementary and middle schools, participating in conferences and community events, and through hosting a "Robotics Reading Hour" at the library.
Position:
Math Teacher
Needs:
To enhance our library program, we'd like to demonstrate to the younger students that robots are accessible to them right now. If we add LEGO Mindstorms robots to our presentations, we can show the students robots that they could have built themselves (and allow them to play with them, too!). Thus, we are seeking one or more of both the LEGO Mindstorms Education NXT Base Set (LEGO Product ID: 979797) and the LEGO Education Resource Set (LEGO Product ID: W979648).
My Philosophy:
At an early age, students create boundaries that limit their own visions of their future potential. Exposing young students to ideas and technology that they never considered enables them to break these boundaries. By having older students demonstrate technology in a familiar package, we are showing these students just how close they are to being able to pursue the same interests.

College and Degrees:
Bachelor's of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Penn State University, 1997 Master's of Business Administration, Cornell University, 2003
Favorite Quotes:
"When it gets dark enough, you can see the stars" -- Lee Salk "Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory" -- Albert Schweitzer "'Beginat the beginning,' the King said, 'and go till you come to the end; then stop'" -- Lewis Carroll
Why Do I Teach?:
Everybody says they love kids, but I guess it's true, because you have to love kids to be a teacher. What I love is helping them discover something new, or better yet, finally understand something that's vexed them for a long time. The education of students isn't just about facts and figures, it's about breaking down barriers and exposing them to new ideas and experiences. The more they see, the more they experience, the greater their frame of reference becomes. With a broader frame of reference, students can make connections and inferences and make better informed decisions about all aspects of their lives. It isn't about teaching math - it's about teaching problem solving skills. It's about helping students become critical thinkers.
