Class Information:
Class Description:
I teach in City Heights in San Diego CA. Our students speak over 30 languages and 100% of the school receives free lunch and title one funding. I teach students who are at risk and have emotional and learning disabilities. This year I developed a social networking site through collective x to create a virtual classroom for students to interact in. I believe most paper and pencil tasks are obsolete, waste resources and are viewed as tedious and unnecessary by students. Rather than filling out a daily "reading log" my students take turns being the discussion moderator and post questions to our blog forum that the students respond to. The site has been a huge success at creating meaningful student engagement. Anothergreat project that our class completed this year was in conjunction with an MIT laboratory here in City Heights. The Fab Lab is one of 24 around the world that was born out of an MIT class on "how to make anything" and is now a real time social experiment with its objective to bridge the technological gap that exists in urban areas and remote places. Our sister Lab is going to be opening soon in Afghanistan. Ourclass completed a Tribute Project to a Hero or Heroine and used software to manipulate student generated content (text and an image) which was then sent to a laser cutter and the content was etched into miniature wood blocks for the students to keep. A larger scale version is going to be displayed in the City Heights Mid City Building in Late June there will be a community Art Unveiling which all students and family will be invited to attend. Position:
Education Specialist
Needs:
My students need access to tools and and inspirational content at school to motivate them and unlock their boundless potential. Check out this video on TeacherTube it summarizes needs of most students in the United States, in keeping with the spirit of Digital wish; http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=6f2c2eba77f39993d118&page=1&viewtype=&category=
My Philosophy:
All students can learn and all people are of equal value. At everyones core is a desire to be seen, heard and acknowledged for who they truly are. If I can do that for a child that is the most important task I can accomplish as an educator... after that the teaching is easy in comparison. :)
