Keywords: Architecture, Geometry, Technology
Subject(s): Math, English/Language Arts, Art, Photography
Grades 4 through 8
School: Doolittle Elementary School, Cheshire, CT
Planned By: Tracy Ajello
Original Author: tracy ajello, Cheshire
Students will take a field trip (or a field trip through their school). They will look for samples of geometry in architecture. For example, Connecticut's state capitol has phenomenal examples in the windows, moldings, wall paper, stencils, carpet, exterior, etc.

They will identify the geometric parts of each design, fractional parts of one whole, etc. They'll look for elements of design as well as cultural origins of design (ex. Islamic designs--inscribe hexagon into a circle, create 3 rhombus, 6 congruent triangles, etc.).

They will use the tools of mathematics (ruler, straight edge, compass, protractor) to recreate these designs using pencil and paper.

They will write sentences explaining mathematics relationships and the steps to recreate the window, stencil, carpet tile, etc.

Then they will use a paint or draw program to create the design and print designs as cards for a service learning writing project.
