The Web Page Design 1 class is a one semester course designed to prepare students in grades 10 to 12, to utilize multimedia functions for web page design using HTML and JavaScript, along with graphics to be able to create quality web pages. The students will use a variety of software applications including Adobe Photo Shop Editor and Macromedia Studio to create pages. Along with computers, Scanners and digital cameras; students create web pages for the school. The course has about 15 students in a class with one to two classes offered a semester. During the same time, I have students in the classroom who are taking Web Page Design 2. These students have successfully completed Web Page Design 1 and are now responsible for maintaining the high school’s web page. Along with updating news and information, the students take pictures of school events and post those pictures on the web site. Students, teachers, parents, alumni, and the community view the page.
Each year the Web Publishing 2 students are required to make a site to enter into a contest. This year the students are doing a site on First Aid and CPR. The students will first research the skills needed to perform basic first aid and CPR. Next the students will split the skills into categories, which will be the different pages for the site. Once they students know how many pages they will need, they will design the pages with a roll over or JavaScript menu. From here the student will create each page with the first aid steps needed to treat someone. The students would then demonstrate these techniques and use the digital camera to take pictures so enhance their web pages. During this element, students would be learning about the components of the camera and becoming familiar with the settings. Students would be allowed to sign out the equipment to work on their projects. Once the photos are taken, students would then use the software to edit and enhance their photos. Once the web page is created, the students are to create a quick reference guide to be handed out to all teachers in the district. This is to be one page, legal size and would be laminated so it can be displayed in the classroom.
Comments
Students would not only be working on their technology skills but would learn skills that one day could save someone’s life.
