Original Author: Tabitha Kosmas, Milton
My special education middle school students struggle with reading and writing. If they can be shown how exciting it is to read a book, they will then become excited about reading and writing. Sharing their published writing is extremely stressing due to the peer pressure that naturally exists in middle schools. Elementary students are wonderful audiences for read alouds. By placing each student in a different elementary classroom to share their writing, my students would be provided an opportunity to feel successful and proud of themselves.

Students would initially select a popular fairy tale to recreate. After reading the fairy tale and identifying each story element, students would be required to rewrite the fairy tale changing the basic elements. Once the story is written and edited, students would take digital photos to accompany their stories. Once the storyis complete with photos, they would be published into hardback bound books for the students to keep after the planned read aloud at the local elementary schools.
