Keywords: Understanding rules, picture taking, book making
Subject(s): English/Language Arts, Information Skills
Grades P-K through 2
School: Pike County Primary School, Zebulon, GA
Planned By: Mimi Roberts
Original Author: Mimi Roberts, Zebulon
After several library lessons on book and showing students the worst things that could happen to a book, can the students apply the knowledge they have. Letting the students get in groups of 3 (most classes are 21 in size), and one student would demonstrate the right way to care for a book, another would demonstrate the wrong way, and the other student would document the experiment by taking pictures using the digital camera. As they worked they would change roles so that every child would experience each role. A rubric would be established to make sure students achieved their goals of understanding book care. Some of the highlighted points would be how to use a shelf marker, how to replace a book on the shelf, how to care for a book (turning pages, turning down page corners, eating or drinking near a book, not drawing in a book, not letting a young child or dog get the book, not losing the book), how to check out a book, and how to carry a book. After the groups take the pictures, they would be printed out. The students would then make a scrapbook and label the right way versus the wrong way. After the books are finished, the book would be scanned and each child would receive a copy of their book. Students in K-2 could participate in this exercise, some would need more help than others. This would take place in several time slots. Each student would be evaluated on what they contributed with the use of a rubric. Another copy of the book would be given to the classroom teacher for her collection and the students would be able to enjoy their book at home, at school and also enjoy their classmates' book. The books could be put in a powerpoint presentation with the student explaining what was happening if time and additional help was available.
