Keywords: science, water quality
Subject(s): Science
Grades 11 through 12
School: North High School, Davenport, IA
Planned By: Laura Howell
Original Author: Laura Howell, Davenport
Goals: The students will examine physical and chemical properties of a local waterway. The students will create a community outreach plan about how to stop pollution.

A-set: Students make a water log for 24 hours to see how much water they pollute on a daily basis. Usually it ends up being a significant amount of water that they don't realize they're wasting.

After discussing how much water is used on a daily basis the students are required to make their own version of the water cycle.

Then the students walk to a local creek, Goose Creek, and begin water quality assessments. They test for pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine, phosphorus, nitrates, temperature, turbidity, flow velocity, wildlife, and any signs of pollution.

The following day the students work on a community outreach plan which ranges from a newspaper article to a short video for a local talk show.
