My class consists of 50% English Language Learners. Outside of this statistic, over 65% are from low income homes. Both of these factors influence the lack of books in the homes of my students. Because of the language barrier, it is very difficult for the parents to help the children specifically with the letters and letter sound relationships. These cameras and printer will allow the children to take pictures of items that begin with a certain letter (as we focus on that letter) and put them in a book that they can take home and read to their parents or other family members. Allowing them to choose their own pictures creates a book that is meaningful to each individual child. They will be more likely to learn the letter and letter sound when that meaning is attached to the letter on the page.
The cameras and printer will also allow us to create our own class books or individual books documenting our field trip experiences. The students will create their own text for the books and would be allowed to take them home to share the experiences with their families. This would provide a home/school connection for the parents who are not able to take off of work and go on field trips with our class.
Comments
My school has a high ESL population and having them participate in making their own alphabet books will attach meaning to the letters and letter sounds for all children including the ESL learners
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
We could also document our field trip experiences and use the cameras and printer to enhance our writing about these trips. This will help our children share their experiences with each other as well as their families.
Follow-Up
We will also use the cameras and printer to make seasonal books for the children to read at home as well as books using high frequency words.
