Students read and discuss stories, poems, and folk tales from many cultures and countries.
Students examine and discuss illustrations, paintings, newsphotos and the visual essay "Mothers and Daughters" from their textbook.
After discussing composition, balance, contrast, etc. Students decide what factors in a photo or illustration most strongly influence the viewers.
Students will plan and compose their own visual essays, attempting to share one of the themes discussed in the literature. Students will try to create one photograph which is truly worth one thousand words.
Students will need digital cameras to share.
Transportation to one or two non school locations to take photos.
Computer access and appropriate photo editing software.
Color printer, ink, paper, etc.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
World literature aids understanding of world history, cultures, geography, foreign languages. Students will also learn basic principles of art, aesthetics, composition, photography.
Follow-Up
We will have an exhibit to share the photos and perhaps a web site.
