Keywords: Digital Pictures, PowerPoint, Science, Technology, Interactive SmartBoards
Subject(s): Science, Technology, Photography, Information Skills
Grades K through 5
School: Jonathan Valley Elem School, Waynesville, NC
Planned By: Roxana Brestle
Original Author: Roxana Cox, Waynesville
Technology helps students become interested in their studies and in their world. Specifically, by using computers coupled with digital cameras, projectors and smart boards, students are empowered and given the chance to produce their own work instead of watching someone else's work. Students become involved in their own creative work and thus are more deeply motivated to learn.

The student will take digital pictures, then upload their work onto a computer. They will share their work and pictures and make class PowerPoint presentations.

1. Brainstorm ideas for pictures. They could be related to whatever theme the class is working on in Social Studies, Science, Health, Math or Language Arts.
2. Divide the students into co-operative groups. Each student is in charge of a particular duty. (Photographer, Material Handler, Uploader, Writer, etc.)
3. Have the students go out and take pictures of their particular category.
4. Students will upload their pictures to the computers.
5. Students will create PowerPoint presentations and use the pictures that everyone took. They will share each other's pictures to make a class presentation on the topic.

Materials: digital cameras, computers, USB cables, MS PowerPoint software, SmartBoard, projector
Comments
The student impact will be enormous! Think of what they are able to accomplish if they are empowered to do and create their own work via technology. Students already love to be the “teacher” and through the use of a SMART board and projector we will be giving them the chance to help other students learn as well as to teach each other cooperatively. The SMART board and projector will enable students to learn interactively rather than passively. If students are engaged interactively they will learn better than if just given the information in a lecture format. I am reminded of the Chinese proverb that so concisely states how children learn best:
I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Students should be expected to perform better in Reading Comprehension tests, Accelerated Reading tests, the SRI test, Math Performance Tasks and Math quarterly tests, Writing test and of course the Computer test. This project can be used with all subjects.
