Define Portray- 1.to make a picture of. 2. depict to describe in words.3. to play the role of .

We will discuss how a photo portrait can portray an individual’s character. We will discuss careers in portrait photography.

Technology- Students will research the internet for five different portrait photographers.
They will copy and paste examples of their work and analyze their portrayals.

Activities- Students will write a portrayal of themselves.
Students will have a portrait done of them and take a portrait.
Students will discuss and research famous portrait -photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Students will be required to have a “Self Portrait” done of themselves. Each student will be paired up with a classmate. They will each take 6 portraits of each other, using the professional lighting studio.

Students will discuss with their partner how the wish to be portrayed for their portrait. Students will come to class prepared with costumes and/or props.

Homework- Students will cut out of newspapers and magazines five different types of portraits and write how each portrait “portrays” the individual.

Higher order thinking question.
Does your self-portrait accurately portray you? How and why?

Future assignments using their portrait include:
- “An Artistic Interpretation of Me.”
-An inclusion in their “Photography Portfolio”.
-Andy Warhol Project
-Framed pictures to bring home as holiday gifts.


Learning Standard 1- Creating, Performing and Participating in the Arts
Students will actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the arts (dance, music, theater and the visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts.

Motivation: Students are told they will have a professional modeling session.
